The Trisagion Vessel
Handcrafted Antiochian Orthodox Vase
Known as the Trisagion, or Thrice-Holy Hymn, this ancient prayer is woven deeply into the liturgical life of the Orthodox Church. Rendered here in Arabic, the inscription bears witness to the ancient and living Arabic-speaking Orthodox Christian tradition of the East.
The hymn unites adoration with supplication: proclaiming the holiness, might, and immortality of God before returning to the enduring prayer of the Church—have mercy on us.
Carved into the stoneware in Arabic script, the prayer becomes inseparable from the vessel itself: sacred words given physical form in clay and preserved through fire.
The Inscription
قُدُّوسٌ اللهُ، قُدُّوسٌ القَوِيُّ، قُدُّوسٌ الَّذِي لا يَمُوتُ، ارْحَمْنَا Holy God. Holy Mighty. Holy Immortal. Have mercy on us.
Surface & Form
The vessel is individually formed by hand with a compact, substantial silhouette that preserves the organic movement of the maker's hand. Its restrained scale and softly irregular form give the piece the character of a small archaeological object or devotional artifact.
The exterior is finished in Alabaster, creating a warm, pale mineral surface against which the inscription becomes the central visual element. Black Magma settles within the inscription, bringing depth and shadow to the sacred text while creating a powerful contrast against the lighter body of the vessel.
The interior is finished in Cold Matte Black, extending the darkness inward and creating a restrained counterpoint to the Alabaster exterior.
Variations in glaze, surface, inscription, and firing remain visible as part of the singular nature of the work.
