Of One Essence with the Father

Handcrafted Orthodox Stoneware Coffee Mug

Of One Essence with the Father is a one-of-a-kind stoneware coffee cup bearing words drawn from the Nicene Constantinopolitan Creed, the ancient confession of faith proclaimed in the Divine Liturgy.

The Greek inscription Ὁμοούσιον τῷ Πατρί is carried across the vessel as more than ornament. It bears witness to one of the central declarations of Orthodox Christianity: that Jesus Christ is not a created being, but truly God, eternally of one essence with the Father.

The vessel is formed in a restrained palette of Alabaster and Black Walnut, interrupted by the vivid warmth of Candy Apple Red and a dark Shino Cacao interior. The resulting surface feels layered and timeworn, giving the cup the presence of an object shaped by both hand and fire.

This work belongs to The Hellenic Script Collection, a curated body of stoneware bearing the language of the historic Greek Orthodox tradition, words of Scripture, prayer, and the ancient proclamations of the Church carried into clay.

The Inscription

Ὁμοούσιον τῷ Πατρί Of one essence with the Father.

These words come from the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed and confess the full divinity of Jesus Christ. The Greek word ὁμοούσιον — homoousion became one of the defining words of the

Church's defense of the Orthodox faith: the Son is of the same divine essence as the Father.

Carried upon an everyday drinking vessel, the inscription brings an ancient confession of faith into the rhythms of ordinary life, a quiet encounter between the sacred and the familiar.

Surface & Form

The exterior is grounded in an Alabaster stoneware surface, creating a warm, mineral-like foundation for the Greek inscription. Black Walnut introduces deeper transitions across the form, while Candy Apple Red with Honey Flux brings a rich, fire-touched accent to the rim.

The interior is finished in Shino Cacao, adding a deep earthen warmth that contrasts with the lighter exterior.

Together, these layered surfaces create the appearance of an aged artifact rather than a uniformly finished object. Variations in glaze movement, color transition, and firing are preserved as part of the singular character of the vessel.
